Vanuatu History of Seafaring depicting Pedro Fenandez de Quiros,
a Portuguese sailing under the Spanish flag who arrived in the
then New Hebrides on 26th April 1606. He was the first European
to discover Vanuatu and being a religious and God-fearing man,
he went ashore with his followers, kneeled down, kissed the ground
and named the island after the Holy Spirit "Terra Australis
